I think it may be a unique idea to allow teams with players in RFA that offseason to match a teams offer (regardless of cap situation) and trade them. This would allow those teams the ability to recoup something of value for the player instead of losing them completely without any compensation.
The sign and trade announcement would have to come at the same time as the acceptance of the offer sheet.
The only negative to this is that the team that missed out on the player (aka the second highest bidder) would be able to make a trade for the player and the highest bidding team would be stuck in limbo unable to acquire them. Unless the rule states that no team involved in bidding can attempt a sign and trade. We’d have to weigh the pros and cons.
